Abstract

New Zealand was involved in the Quadrilateral Defence Coordination Group Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) operation Nasse 2018. During vessel inspections observations were made in respect to compliance with Conservation and Management Measure to Mitigate the Impact of Fishing for Highly Migratory Fish Stocks on Seabirds (CMM 2017-06) of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC).
A total of 23 longline fishing vessels were inspected by New Zealand during Operation Nasse 2018. This paper provides summary information on the inspections, and presents photographic records taken during the inspections. They are presented here to inform discussions on the nature of seabird bycatch mitigation currently in use on the high seas.
