• Adequate training of fishermen by experienced researchers is essential to reduce post-release sea turtle mortality (Parga 2012). • Techniques and gear modifications have been developed to reduce turtle bycatch, but the dynamics and operations of different fisheries do not always allow these modifications to be applied, due to local fishing conditions and their profitability. • There is still much to be learned before we can accurately evaluate post-release mortality; in the meantime, the alternative is to use the best possible knowledge of experts and fishermen. • Costa Rica and Panama are currently very interested in solving bycatch problems with sea turtles in a proactive and efficient way, as part of their commitment to move towards sustainable fisheries. • Both countries have regulations on training in best practices for sea turtles. • IATTC Resolution C-19-04 to mitigate impacts on sea turtle.
