Sharing information on fishing techniques that work, as well as those that don't, is an important first step in tackling bycatch. This is one of the ideas behind the new BMIS and the recent ABNJ/ WCPFC bycatch problem-solving workshop held in Noumea, New Caledonia.
The workshop was designed to introduce the BMIS, obtain feedback on its performance and illustrate how it can help address some of the bycatch issues facing the region. Participants included bycatch scientists, conservation advocates, a longline vessel captain and representatives from WCPFC member countries.
In small groups, participants used the BMIS to work through sea turtle and seabird mitigation evaluations. Attention was given to resource materials held in the database, such as safe handling and release guidelines and species identification guides.
