How to engage with RFMOs to develop conservation measures

A guide for those wishing to engage with Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) to develop conservation measures has been recently published under the auspices of the STRONG High Seas Project. The project aims to strengthen regional ocean governance for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ).

Getting legally binding measures for ABNJ approved and enforced in an RFMO is a complex, multi-stage process. This guide offers insights and strategic considerations on how to navigate the process. It is a distillation of the author's personal experiences, derived from participation in numerous RFMO meetings, including successes, failures, and insights into some of the more arcane aspects of RFMOs’ functioning.
