Abstract

Marine mammals are some of the most interesting organisms on planet earth. Though they have been widely studied over the years, much is yet to be known. In India 26 species of marine mammals are known to be present out of close to 130 species reported from around the world. Lack of knowledge on distribution and abundance of most of these species in Indian waters has been the biggest hurdle for their conservation. The ever-increasing anthropogenic pressure on the marine realm has posed a great threat to these beautiful animals. Proper planning and management of habitats and dedicated research on marine mammals will lead to greater understanding of these magnificent animals and thereby help in their protection and conservation. Creating awareness and educating fishermen can play a vital role in conservation of marine mammals of India.
