Abstract

The National Plan of Action for Minimising Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Australian Capture Fisheries (NPOA–Seabirds) was released by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources in 2018. NPOA-Seabirds provides a national approach to mitigating the impact of fishing on seabirds by providing guidance on best-practice mitigation, monitoring and reporting of seabird interactions for all fishing activities. NPOA-Seabirds fulfils Australia’s obligation to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations by aligning national efforts with those of the FAO’s International Plan of Action for Reducing Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries (IPOA–Seabirds) and associated best practices for reducing incidental catch of seabirds in capture fisheries.
