This paper describes the trip of two Mauritanian longliners that operated in 2016 targeting tuna species. 99% of the catches taken during this trip were shark, including blue shark. In the absence of onboard scientific observers during the trip, difficulties were encountered in identifying the species landed. The significant catches of shark drew attention to the significant catches of the 62 tuna vessels operating in the area of Mauritania within the framework of the fishing agreements that are landed outside of Mauritania. Close monitoring of the activity of the longliners and other tuna fleets should be strengthened and ensured to better describe and understand the dynamics of this fishery.
