Regulation Title
Conservation Measures for the Protection and Sustainable Management of Sharks
Description

The Resolution addresses:

  • National Plans of Action (NPOA) for sharks
  • Retention and Utilization - requires fishers to fully utilize all retained catches of sharks (except for those spp with retention ban); shark finning prohibited - methods to ensure carcasses and fins can be easily identified are specified
  • Bycatch and Release - safe handling and release provisions for longline and purse seine vessels (Appendix 3); prohibits use of shark lines (buoy lines)
  • Research - e.g., stock assessments for key species (including but not limited to oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus), silky shark (C. falciformis), and hammerhead sharks Sphyrna lewini, S. zygaena and S. mokarran), alternatives for wire leaders, nursery areas, biological parameters...
  • Reporting and Data Collection

  • This Resolution shall enter into force on July 1, 2024
  • Upon the date this Resolution enters into force, the following Resolutions are repealed and replaced: C-05-03, C-16-04, and C-16-05.
