Resolution on the Design and Biodegradability of Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADs) in the IATTC Area of Competence
Description
Resolution addresses a (gradual/stepwise) timeline for the implementation of fully biodegradable, non-entangling FADs to reduce (without compromising fishing efficiency):
- the entanglement of sharks, marine turtles or any other species
- other ecosystem impacts of 'lost' FADs (e.g., shedding heavy metals or plastics into the marine environment, stranding on beaches or reefs, ghost fishing)
